Itinerary Overview

8 day Tanzania safari will immerse you in northern Tanzania’s best areas for wildlife viewing and traditional cultural encounters. You’ll be able to appreciate some of the finest scenery in the northern circuit as well. Lake Manyara is a beautiful, smaller national park with fun wildlife viewing and it’s ideal for viewing birds with over 400 species. Tarangire is a remarkable park filled with giant baobabs and large acacias with a wide variety of games such as lions, elephants, zebras, pythons, giraffes, and waterbuck.

Ngorongoro is the largest intact crater in the world with games ranging from rare black rhinos to huge bull elephants. Lake Eyasi is one of the best cultural destinations in Africa. Lake Natron offers outstanding desert scenery and walking. You will also visit the Serengeti, Tanzania’s most famous and largest national park and one of the most spectacular parks in the world.

The “endless plains” cover some 14,763 square kilometers including large plains, short grass plains, kopjes, and lakes. Here we watch big cats and their cubs thrive in the wild and massive herds of ungulates roaming the vast expanses.

This safari is a private trip, with a private safari guide and private custom Land Cruiser, with an itinerary you are welcome to customize to best suit your needs and interests. While we list a number of recommended safari lodges, we book all the lodges and you can request specific ones and we’ll re-quote the trip accordingly.

Like all safaris, we’d advise you to arrive at Kilimanjaro airport the day before “Day 1” of your safari and overnight in Arusha or nearby Moshi. We can arrange private airport transfers on request and we book all of the hotels in the area.

DAY

01

ARRIVAL IN ARUSHA

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) which caters for domestic flights, you will be met by African Big Cats Safaris representative who will drive you to your accommodation in Arusha. overnight will be at the Ilboru Safari Lodge a Calm lodge located in the suburbs of the city with a natural set up with beautiful garden awaiting for your safari the following day.

Drive to Lake Manyara or Tarangire for an afternoon game drive (LD)

December through May: Depart for Lake Manyara National Park with a picnic lunch and enjoy a game drive here until late afternoon.

Lake Manyara is a highly scenic park, rimmed on one side by the tall cliffs of the Rift escarpment, and ringed with a variety of habitats including the namesake for the park, Lake Manyara. The game we see in Manyara include hippos, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, impala, dwarf mongooses, hyraxes, hippos, wildebeest, zebra, and on rare occasions, tree-climbing lions and leopards.

Birding is special here. Species include pink-backed pelican, flamingos, yellow-billed stork, and many other Eurasian migrants. The forests provide habitat for the silvery-cheeked hornbill while the savannah is home to the Leadbeater hornbill. Birds of prey include Ruppel’s griffon, Egyptian vulture, martial eagle, Verreaux’s eagle, crowned eagle, peregrine falcon, and bat hawk. Bright songbirds found here include Fischer’s lovebird, Peters twinspot, and yellow and red barbets.

June through November: Depart for Tarangire National Park with a picnic lunch and game drive until late afternoon. Tarangire is famous for its huge herds of elephants, healthy and large lion pride, and towering baobab trees. Throughout the dry season, thirsty antelope and elephants trek from many miles away to drink along the Tarangire River. Rare mammals here include the long-necked gerenuk, oryx, and wild dog.

NGORONGORO CRATER TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Early morning after breakfast, we depart to Ngorongoro crater. When you first see Ngorongoro Crater, it looks like a forgotten world. Concealed by the steep volcanic walls is a pristine wilderness including sweeping savannah, pockets of acacia woodland and glistening lakes and swamps. The Crater was created when a large volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself two to three million years ago. It is famous for both its geological delights and for being a natural reserve which is home to some of the densest large mammal populations in the whole of the African continent. The Crater provides you with the best chance of seeing the endangered black rhino, which can sometimes be spotted in the open grasslands.

After Lunch and an extensive game drive, we head for Serengeti National Park for dinner and overnight. You will spend 2 nights inside this incredible park.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK TO LAKE NATRON

After breakfast at your accommodation you will head out for another game drive in the Serengeti before having an en-route game drive to Natron via Klein’s gate. Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction – the area around the lake inhabited by Maasai is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful. You will arrive at your accommodation in time for dinner.

LAKE NATRON TO KARATU

After an early Breakfast, we will start our activities at Lake Natron which includes following paths to some of the most interesting localities, such as hot springs, Ngare Sero waterfalls and much more. Situated at the base of Africa’s only active volcano Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God), Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. The lake is home to millions of tiny crustaceans, attracting thousands of lesser flamingos and it is therefore one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth.
After lunch and further time to enjoy the activities here we drive back to tour accommodation in Karatu, we will arrive in time for Dinner and Overnight.

LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK TO ARUSHA

Early morning after breakfast, we depart to we depart to Lake Manyara National Park which is an unspoilt paradise and is best known for its abundance of birds and tree-climbing lions. The dramatic western escarpment of the Rift Valley forms the Park’s western border. To the east is the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara. The lake covers a large area of the park, flooding and drying with the seasons and is home to thousands of flamingos during the rains. The name Manyara comes from the Maasai word ‘emanyara’, a popular plant which is used to build the protective enclosure around a family homestead (boma). The Park’s vegetation is diverse, ranging from savannah to evergreen forest. On your exploration of the park you may see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant and if you are lucky; lions lounging in the trees. After Lunch and an extensive game drive, we head back to.
